National Capital Area Cake Show 2012

This past weekend I was able to stop by the National Capital Area Cake show in northern VA. I did not have the opportunity to enter a cake myself, but I always like to go and see other peoples great talent. The theme for the wedding cakes this year was bags or purses. Each entrant had to select a purse to design their cake around. I didn't stay to see who won the competition, but I certainly had my favorites.

I love the neutral tones of this cake!. It is very well executed.

This cake was my favorite. it showed a wide range of techniques, and of course the peacock is stunning! This would have been my choice for winner, but again I am not sure who took home the gold.

What Inspires You?

I tell all my brides to bring whatever they may want incorporated into their cake with them to the tasting so that we can sit down, and design their dream wedding cakes. I have had brides bring me a lot of different elements to incorporate into their cake. Some of the most popular inspirations include:

Dress- Brides love to incorporate aspects of their dress into the design of their wedding cakes!

Season- The time of year can be a great source of inspiration. For springtime fruits, and flowers, and in the fall pumpkins and leaves.

Flowers- Bouquets and centerpieces are a great place to draw inspiration from and tie the wedding cake into the rest of the wedding.

  

Invitations- The invitation is a great source for inspiration. A lot of invitations include scroll work or floral patterns that can be incorporated into cakes.

Hometown- People are proud of where they grew up, and some like to incorporate aspects of their hometown into their cakes such as landmarks or popular foods, flowers, and fruits.

 Color- Some brides like to incorporate their wedding colors into the cake.

 Hobbies- Incorporating things that the couple likes to do together can make a cake unique to the couple.

So whatever you are inspired by make sure that you have the cake of your dream on you wedding day!
