What to do in a Cake Crisis

Hello long time no talk. Today I wanted to share a little story that happened to me over the weekend on one of my deliveries. This weekend was crazy busy for me with lots of weddings and desserts to deliver. So I guess I will start off with some happy things like pictures of desserts and then I will get to my Sunday delivery crisis.

 Love this dessert table set-up

Sundays wedding was in Mt. Airy Maryland which, is about a 1 hour and 20 minutes delivery so we decided to start off early to make sure we had plenty of time to get to the venue. You never know what could happen especially with traffic. It is a very good thing we left so early because about 3 miles from the venue our SUV decided to just stop working. It completely shut off while we were driving. I kind of started to panic because it was over 80 degrees that day and the car started to heat up pretty quickly. Luckily, I had the number of the planner with me so I arranged for someone to come get us so we could deliver the desserts.

We managed to transfer everything into the caterers truck and get it delivered before everything melted in the heat. It is a good thing we left early because otherwise I am not sure we would have made it. I will admit that it was a very stressful situation but I I think we handled it well and the couple knew nothing about the small crisis going on behind the scenes.

I always make sure to have the venue contact info along with the person in charge of the weddings info  just in case something like this could happen.  I will admit that it was slightly embarrassing to have to call for a ride but, you have to do what you have to do. If we had been any farther from the venue my plan of action would have been to rent a vehicle to get the cake to the venue. Things like this happen but you need to make sure you remain calm and think clearly or at least have someone with you who can do that for you.

In the end our car didn't make it and we put it to rest. It has been a great delivery vehicle but, now we need to find something more reliable for the future.

So until next time happy caking!

Have you ever had a cake crisis? How did you handle it?

Recent Wedding Cakes

Since wedding season is officially upon us I thought I would share some of our more recent cakes. First, up was an all buttercream cake with royal icing piping. The bride wanted the cake to have a lot of over piping and detail. This is not traditionally our style but I think this cake looked beautiful, classic and elegant.

Here is a close-up of all that piping which took hours of work.
The bride also ordered a surprise grooms cake for her hubby. I love when a bride does this but it always makes it tricky for me not to accident;y ruin the surprise. So far I have not spilled the beans early, and have not run into any grooms while delivering surprise cakes.
The boat was purchased with the couples honeymoon money so the boat was named "the honeymoon" in Italian. So cute!

The next cake was a cake we made for Cake Central magazine. It was featured in Volume 4 issue 4. The theme was ombre and the inspiration picture included a bride with yellow orchids and yellow and green striped hair. I went with a square cake because the inspiration picture was very modern. I wanted to display ombre is a different way so I came up with this modern design and added the orchids to include the inspiration photo.

The next cake made in collaboration with a local invitation vendor friend that wanted to pair his invitations with a matching cake. The invitation we selected were a very pale pink and ivory with hints of brown. When I looked at the invitations I thought it would be easy to come up with a matching cake but, after changing my design several times I finally came up with something I was happy with and matched the invitations to a tee.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into some of the things we have been working on lately. We have lots of great things to come this year so stay tuned for more great tutorials, birthday bashes and real weddings.

Recent Wedding Cakes

I wanted to share some recent cakes with all of you. I am behind on blogging, but I am trying to catch up so without further ado here are some more recent cakes. The first wedding was Shannon and Matt's wedding at Top of the Bay in Aberdeen. Shannon wanted her wedding cake to be classic and elegant. She opted for an all ivory fondant cake with ivory sugar flowers and a bow that matched her dress.

Close-up of the sugar flowers.
Close-up of the bow! I think we matched the bow and beading perfectly to the bride's dress!
Shannon also ordered a surprise grooms cake for Seth. We decided on a Jet's hat. I made the board look like a football field for an added touch. We had to sneak this groom's cake inside since the groom didn't know about it. it was quite the challenge to make sure the groom didn't see it since he was hanging around while everything was being set-up. We managed to get it past him into the venue though with the help of the wait staff.
Here is the beautiful bride in her gorgeous dress!
Next up, we had Lindsey and Matt's wedding at Swan Harbor. Lindsey was going with the popular chevron pattern and  yellow, gray, and turquoise for colors. We designed a gray cake with polka dot and chevron pattern and a big sunflower for a pop of color. Lindsey was having a friend make cupcakes to match the theme.
 Close-up of the sunflower.
Here is the complete set-up at the wedding. I think it turned out very nicely. I love the chevron and polka dot cupcake wrappers. I also love that she made a sign that specified when the dessert bar was open. I know from experience that everyone will try to sneak a cupcake beforehand without a sign :)
The bride incorporated her grandmother's cake topper. i love this vintage cake topper and think it was a great finishing touch to the cake!
That's it for now!
Lastly, we have been entered in a contest as Best Cakes in Aberdeen Md. The contest runs until August 30th. Please go and vote for us. You can submit a vote everyday until the 30th.
Thanks again!

Beers and Baltimore 30th Birthday

I wanted to share a recent birthday that I had the pleasure of being a part of. My good friend Steve turned the big 3-0 last weekend, ( that means I'm getting closer too ahhh) so we threw a party in his honor. His girlfriend Gina told me that I could do whatever I wanted for his cake. We decided on a Baltimore theme since Steve likes to go to both the Raven and the Orioles games.

Since we just recently made a crab basket I decided to make this one a bit different by making it looked like it was spilling out crabs. We then added everything Baltimore including Old Bay, a Ravens hat, a Natty Boh bottle and everything you would find to eat at a sporting event. We made a scoreboard with his birthday as the score and 30 as the time. We also made the board look like a football field with 30 in the middle. i love how this cake turned out overall.

I must confess that we ran out of time so we put real popcorn in the popcorn bucket. however the sweet of the cake and salty of the popcorn tasted really good together!

 Steve cutting his cake!
 Everyone enjoying the cake.

My poor cake after everyone dug into it. i must say it is a little sad to see all your hard work destroyed, but that it the reason I do this so people can enjoy it.
I hope you liked your cake Steve, and had a very happy birthday!

P.S. In case you are wondering sugar bottles do break over peoples heads!

Wedding cakes and a Baltimore grooms cake

Sorry for the lack in posting, but we have been pretty busy around here with cakes and other
event. I just wanted to stop by and share some recent cakes that we had done. The first up was
for a my bride Nikki who wanted a small wedding cake for cutting, and an awesome Baltimore
themed grooms cake for her man. The wedding cake itself was very simple and elegant with a
fresh flower topper.

For the grooms cake we went all out. The bride said that she wanted a cake to represent
Baltimore and the Ravens but also include her groom’s Filipino background. So of course
when everyone thinks of Baltimore they think of crabs. So to incorporate everything the bride
wanted we decided to make a crab basket set on top of edible newspaper with Ravens headlines.
(Since you always throw down some newspaper to eat your crabs). We also added an Old Bay
container, a crab mallet with the Filipino flag on it and their wedding date, a bottle of Miller Lite
and a shot glass for good measure.
I love the way this cake turned out and some of the guest couldn't believe it was a cake.
Everything on the cake was edible from the edible newspaper to the sugar beer bottle that we
made. I think the "Old Bay" we added to the crabs really made them come to life.

To finish out the weekend we made a country themed wedding cake. I love it when a bride steps
out of the box and lets us create a really fun wedding cake. The cake fit nicely into the venue and
the decor the bride had selected for her big day!
I absolutely loved the bride’s choice for her head table. It was so rustic but elegant at the same
time, and it fit the theme perfectly.
This cake was so much fun to make. I hope I get to do more themed wedding cakes in the future.
So that's all I have for you guys for now! I do have some really big news I want to share, but I
have to hold off until I know it will be official. Thanks for stopping by!

National Capital Area Cake Show

So last week I shared some of the great wedding cakes from the VA show, and now I wanted to share some awesome entries into the non-wedding portion of the show.

First up this very cool pirate cake, because who doesn't like a pirate cake right?

I had to get a shot of this steampunk cake. I think I will try my hand at steam punk in the future.

This is an adorable dog tea party cake.
Lobster anyone?

Check out all that detail!
These next two turtle cakes are unbelievable. They look so realistic.

Pretty awesome!

So that was a glimpse at some of the great cakes that VA had to offer. Hopefully I will get to go to the MD show in May and actually enter a cake.
