Dragons Love Tacos Third Birthday

So this year for my nephew Owen's third birthday he decided he wanted a party based on his favorite book right now which is Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin. This is a super cute book about dragons that love tacos, so if you want to lure dragons to your party better serve tacos, but better watch out for that spicy salsa. I decided to use the cover art dragon for the cake but made him green instead of red because that is Owen's favorite color. Of course as with every cake we make for Owen it has to be special so we decided to make this dragon smoke because he had to much spicy salsa at this party. The smoking dragon was a big hit with all the kids. I also included sugar cookie "chips" with fruit "salsa" and dragon feet cookies. Hope you enjoy the party this year. If you missed last years party be sure to check it out here.

We decided on less desserts this year and focused more on the dragon cake. I think it turned out really well and Owen loved it!

The tacos are made from Oreo cookies. I will be sharing a tutorial on how to make them in the near future.

Of course if we wanted to lure dragons to the party we had to have a taco bar!
Time to break open the dragon pinata!

This was a favorite activity!

Too much spicy salsa for this dragon!

Making the dragon smoke was a little tricky to figure out but we managed to pull it off and have more knowledge moving forward for our next smoking cake! Happy Birthday Owen! I hope you loved your cake and had a blast at your party! You are turning out to be one awesome little dude and I love being here to see you grow up!

Here is a short video of the cake in action!

Disney and a Special Birthday Surprise!

So for those of you that follow me on Facebook know I went on a family vacation to Disney back in October. This year the whole family was going including all of my nieces and nephews who had never been to Disney. It was especially special because it was my niece's Paige sixth birthday while we were there.
So naturally I came up with a plan to make her a birthday cake, and have my wonderful husband drive it 900+ miles down to Florida.
If anyone has ever delivered a cake, you know it is very stressful, so this was especially nerve wracking since the cake had to go so far. Luckily for my husband, I was not in the car with him for the drive, otherwise I'm sure I would have been driving him nuts checking on the cake. My husband did a great job though because the cake made it in one piece with no damage.
When I got down there I had to finish decorating the cake, adding Minnie's ears and her bow to the top tier. Sometimes when you are on the road you don't have all the tools you need so you have to improvise. I didn't have a steamer with me so I used the tea pot to remove the excess powdered sugar from the ears and bow.
For the design I decided to go with a similar design to my Mickey Mouse cake since it was so popular. I went with pink for Minnie instead of red because what little girl doesn't love pink.

I think she really liked her surprise!

Of course, I had to include some pictures from Disney!

We decided to go to the Mickey Mouse Halloween Party which, I would highly recommend. I think all of the kids had a blast seeing the special parade and trick-or-treating in the park.

So I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our family vacation! If you live near Disney you have to go and see the parks decorated for the season!

Seth's Jake the Pirate 2nd Birthday

Janice and Marty's (good friends of ours) nephew was turning the big 2, and we were asked to make the cake. We were allowed to make anything we wanted as long as it was Jake and the Neverland Pirates themed. I wanted to do something over the top, and something we had never done before. I came up with the design of Jake holding up the treasure chest that was full of gold doubloons. We have never made a huge character holding up a cake before so, structurally this was going to be a challenge.

I went over the design with my husband Jason since he comes up with most of my support structures in my cakes. I also put the task of making Jake on him since I feel that he is better at figure modeling then I am. I think he did a fantastic job! It is really difficult to get characters (especially Disney) to look exact, but I think he nailed it. Of course I got to do the easy part of making the treasure chest and the gold to fill it.
The cake was huge. I think it was around 3ft tall when we had it all put together.

Here is the birthday boy ready for his Jake the Pirate party!

Cutting the cake!

I hope Seth had an awesome birthday! I love when we get to challenge ourselves with cakes. If anyone is interested I believe my husband took in progress pictures that I could share how we made Jake.

P.S. The last post was my 100th post yay! Hopefully I'll have 100 more.

Sesame Street Birthday

This year I had the pleasure of making cupcakes for Cole's 2nd Birthday. You may remember the Mickey Mouse first birthday cake that we did for him. This year the theme was Sesame Street and each cupcake was decorated like a different character. We had so much fun creating these characters for Cole. Big thanks to Jessie Rae Photography for the photos. If you need a photographer in the MD/VA area then you should definitely contact her. She does amazing work!

Looks like the party was a lot of fun. Happy 2nd Birthday Cole! I look forward to being a part of many many more!
