Cole's Planes Birthday

So it has been forever since my last blog post. I have been super busy with engagement season but I wanted to share this super sweet Planes themed party with you.

Every year my friend Amber goes all out for her kids birthdays and this year was no exception. Cole wanted a Dusty cake from the movie Planes. Of course we couldn't just make a plane laying flat on the board we had to make it up on two wheels. I have to give all the credit to my awesome cake husband who constructed the structure for the plane. I don't know what I would do without him! I love the way the cake turned out and I think Ambers party set-up was amazing as always. So check out this awesome Dusty themed party!

Amber made these cute cupcakes with matching toppers to go along with the cake.
This is unreal! Look at this awesome photo booth Amber set-up!

I love details!

Happy 4th Birthday Cole! I am sure it was an awesome one for you! I can't wait to make many many more cakes for you! Thanks to Amber for all the great photos from the party!

Easter Bunny Butt Tutorial

Every year for Easter my family has to have a coconut cake. I don't know what it is about spring but, it always makes me want to eat a good coconut cake! Yum! So this year I wanted to make the traditional coconut cake with an Easter twist. This cake is super quick and easy to make so I made this tutorial so hopefully you cake make this cute cake for your family.

First, you want to start with a half ball cake that is filled and crumb coated. If you don't know how to achieve a half ball please check out my elephant tutorial where I explain how it is carved.

While the cake is firming up you will need to make a cake ball for the bunny's tail. After forming the cake balls pop them in the freezer for a few minutes to let them firm up a bit.

After the cake pops are firm dip your stick into the melted chocolate and then directly into the cake pop.

Then immediately dip the cake pop into the melted chocolate.

Let some up the excess chocolate drip off before moving to the next step.
Next roll your still wet cake pop in shredded coconut. I used Baker's angel flake coconut that comes in the bag but, you can use whatever type you choose. I also, put my coconut in the food processor in order to make the coconut flakes finer.

Here are two little bunny tails!
(Making bunny tails is also a cute idea for the left over cake scraps.)

After you have made the bunny tails ice you cake in a thick layer of buttercream and then cover in the remaining coconut flakes. Make sure to press the coconut into the cake so that it sticks.
After you have finished covering the cake set it aside so you can work on the feet. I made the feet from fondant and then let them dry a bit while I worked on the cake board. Make sure you don't make the feet to flat.

Cover the board in a thin layer of green buttercream.

Then place you cake on the board and add a thick layer of green buttercream around the base. Don't worry if it is messy because it will be covered by dirt (ground Oreos).

Add the feet to the cake using dowels and, buttercream to hold them in place. Ground Oreos in a food processor and, then add the "dirt" to the perimeter of the cake. Press the "dirt" into the buttercream to ensure that it sticks to the board and cake.

Continue to add the "dirt" to the cake border until it is completely covered and you are happy with the results. You can always go back later and add more dirt to cover up any imperfections.

Next, add a buttercream grass border to finish of the edge of the cake board. Finally don't forget to add your bunny tail to complete your cake. Be careful when pushing you bunny tail into the cake so that you don't break it.

So there you have it a simple cute Easter cake that your guests will love. If you have any questions please let me know. I will post my full Easter dessert spread a little later.
Happy Easter!

How to make an elephant cake tutorial

A couple weeks ago I posted Cole's wild safari party which, included a cute elephant cake and wild animal cupcakes.  Also, as many of you already know I am also a guest blogger on Spaceships and Laser beams so I wrapped the two together and came up with how to plan a wild animal kingdom party and also gave a tutorial on how to sculpt an elephant cake. If you want some ideas on how to plan a wild animal kingdom party for your little one please go check out my post. You can also follow me on Pinterest where I pin lots of ideas for different parties and events. So without further ado I will share with you the tutorial on how to make this cute little elephant. I hope you enjoy it and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

First up you will need to bake one 8” round cake and, one half ball cake. The half ball cake pan is a Wilton product, which can be purchased at most local craft stores.

Next, cut the 8” tier in half because we will only need one layer to achieve the correct height. After you have one layer of the 8” cake you can place the half ball cake on top and, then carve down the sides so that the cake bottom cake is level with the half ball cake. After you have carved your cake you can spread icing on the entire cake and set aside to firm up.

Next up, we will work on the board for the cake so that it will resemble grass that the elephant is sitting on. You will need to get a board approximately 14” x 10” (board size will vary depending on how big you make the legs) and cover it in fondant. After the entire board is covered in fondant take green food coloring and add streaks of color to the fondant. Before the food coloring dries take a paper towel and pat the streaked area to give the fondant the appearance of grass. Repeat this process until you have covered the entire board. After you have finished the board you can move on to covering the body of the elephant in gray fondant. Don’t forget to add some wrinkles!

When you have completed the board and body you can move on to shaping the legs and head out of rice cereal treats. I used rice cereal because it is easy to shape and also kids love it! The head will be the hardest part of the body to shape. You want to make sure the head matches the size of the body you have so be sure to check it while forming the head. After you have completed the head you can shape the legs. You will want to make sure the entire elephant will fit on the board you have cut so you may need to modify the legs a little to make sure everything fits

After sculpting the head and legs you can cover everything in matching gray fondant and add some cute matching wrinkles. Then you can place the entire elephant onto your board. At this point you will want to hide the gaps between the legs and the body by adding extra wrinkles (fondant) into those shapes.

Lastly, you add all the details to your elephant to make him come to life! For the ears cut a template out of paper to line up with the elephant before cutting them out of fondant. Once you have the ears in place use paper towels or dowels to support the ears in place while they dry. You may need to add dowel supports behind the ears for extra stability. If the border around your elephant is not as clean as you would like then you can add a simple grass border to hide the imperfections. Don’t forget his eyebrows, toenails, and tail!

Ta-da a cute little elephant fit for any child's birthday!

Hope this tutorial will help you guys out! Keep an eye for my guest blogging post on Spaceships and Laser beams where I will give new party ideas and a matching tutorial every month. Don't forget to enter our giveaway to win an Ipad or Ipad mini (three chances to win). The giveaway will run until the end of March!

Cole's Wild Safari 3rd Birthday

Every year so far I have had the pleasure of making Cole's birthday cake! You may remember his 2nd birthday and his 1st birthday. It is so cool to watch my clients grow each year. This year Cole wanted an animal safari party and specifically requested an elephant cake.

For the cake we wanted to keep the elephant cute and more like a cartoon than realistic. I love the way he turned out and he was super fun to make. Cole's mom Amber told me that Cole absolutely loved his cake which makes all the hard work worth it.

Of course, with such a cute little elephant we had to make some really cute animal cupcake friends too.
We decided on zebras, lions, elephants, and tigers. I think the little lions are my favorite!
Amber always out does herself for Cole's parties with fun games and activities for the kids!

I hope you had a very Happy Birthday Cole and, I'm glad I got to be a part of it.

Lastly, congratulations to Amber and Allen who are expecting another little boy very soon. Best wishes to your growing family!

These boy party ideas were also featured on Spaceships and Laser Beams.
